The birth of a fragrance
The best way to imagine creating a fragrance is to compare it to composing music. Like a song, a fragrance should capture the essence of the moment and evoke something within us – a feeling of calm and peace or one of wild adventure. Sometimes the inspiration for this comes from the history of the house, sometimes the fragrance grows from a trend or a special ingredient – we set no limits. Around 2500 to 3500 fragrances can be used to create perfumes. “We have many more raw ingredients available to us than musicians have notes. And yet there are always new songs. So, this is also the case in the world of fragrances”, says Alexandra Kalle, fragrance expert and perfumer for the 4711 brand.
Uniqueness of Eau de Cologne
Eau de Cologne is the lightest form of perfume and was originally created as a refreshing water. The fragrance content of 2 to 5 percent makes this variant extremely light and fleeting, which is why it is so well suited for daily use. When composing a fragrance, our perfumers play with three levels: top note, heart note and base note. These are the essence of every fragrance. The top note of a perfume is the first impression. It is the substance that determines whether the fragrance catches our attention and inspires us instantly. The heart note defines the character of a perfume. It lasts for several hours and is the most intense component. And the base note contains long-lasting ingredients that carry through the day and accompany the wearer many hours after the scent has been applied.
Infinitely inspired, whisked away into new worlds
The complexity and creativity of the art of the perfumer meet in a special way in the 4711 Acqua Colonia series. The fragrances combine selected natural ingredients to form new and surprising creations. All the fragrances in the series are designed to influence the mood. For example, the bright combination in Vincent Schaller's Acqua Colonia Lemon & Ginger fragrance invigorates and revitalises, while Acqua Colonia Lychee & White Mint by Natalie Gracia-Cetto has an exhilarating effect.
The fragrances of 4711 Acqua Colonia Intense go a step further. They offer a particularly long-lasting fragrance experience and their compositions not only pay homage to exceptional and rare ingredients but to entire landscapes. Each of the four fragrances takes you on a journey. “Majestic and mysterious like the scent of a Scandinavian pine forests in the morning”, is how perfumer Geza Schön describes his creation, 4711 Acqua Colonia Intense Wakening Woods of Scandinavia which contains, among other ingredients, “Fir balsam absolute”, a liquid, fir-tree extract.
In the House 4711, we also love to be inspired by trends. The new 4711 Acqua Colonia Limited Edition relies on the innovative Smell the Taste technology. The technology allows us to capture seductive and juicy fresh notes in such a way that they radiate a pleasant naturalness.
An icon gets a floral makeover
Perfumers who work for 4711 also enjoy creating floral fragrances. After all, floral notes have always been a key part of the perfumer's repertoire. Like citric notes, floral essences have been one of the most frequently used natural raw materials throughout history. As a tribute to these creations and as an appreciation of the world of flowers in perfumery, we have launched the 4711 Original Eau de Cologne Floral Collection in the scents Rose, Lilac, Jasmine and Magnolia.
